Apple iOS update 5.1.1 - now available for iPhone and iPad

This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:

Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase

The iPad is a great device for pleasure and getting a lot better as business productivity tool. I am sure we have all sat in meetings when he iPad is whipped out and the owner starts

But what about getting access to the shared office documents when you are out of the office ?

How about an app to connect the office via a VPN to securely browse the same documents you see when you are in the office.

We get asked often how to extend the ringing time on a iPhone. If you are with telstra it is easy. Just follow the instructions below and you can change the settings to the time that suites.

Yes, you can. By default, your phone rings for 15 seconds before diverting a call to MessageBank® – you can change this using increments of five seconds (up to 30 seconds).

To extend the ring time, enter the following sequence on your mobile phone:

**61*101**(number of seconds: 15, 20, 25 or 30)#

Then press the call/send button, which usually looks like this:

Restoring or removing original settings

To restore all three conditional call forwarding settings (Busy, No Answer, No Reply) to MessageBank®, enter **004*101#.

To remove all three conditional call forwarding settings (Busy, No Answer, No Reply) to MessageBank®, enter ##004#.

Both of these actions will set the default ring time of 15 seconds.

Dell Prosupport - Gets you going again FAST

We will always recommend hardware warranties on all the equipment we sell. It make good business sense to have a computer or server warranty problems dealt with buy by the manufacture and get them to come on-site to replace any broken for failed components.

As a Dell reseller we recommend the Dell ProSupport. We had to call on it yesterday for a 6 month old Dell Optiplex 990 DT that refused to start. It was the first issue we have had with the Optiplex 990 DT.

The Dell technician replaced the motherboard and the computer booted normally.

The client was very pleased to have it fix so promptly. This is the sort of outcome we expect from Dell ProSupport.

New iPad 4G but no Telstra 4G network access

The iPad 3 with 4G has been shipped to Australia with Telstra receiving shipment nice and early for sale at midnight on the 14th March 2012- the day it was released.

It had been expected that the new iPad would support the new Telstra 4G LTE network. It doesn't it will only support 3G - yet apple call the new iPad the iPad 4G......

So don't be tricked into thinking the new iPad will download from the Telstra network at double the speed of the old 3G network it won't.

Will there be a update to give it Telstra 4G capability? We hope so but who know when it will be released.

As for the price it is the same as the iPad 2 with the older version being discounted a little.

ATO Tax Refund Notification Scam

We have just received an email from the ATO. We all know that banks and the ATO do not send us emails. They just don't! So when you get one you should be very suspicious.

The ATO have space on their website explaining what you should beleive and ignore.

The Email looked like this - but the attachment was the gotcha asking for your Credit Card details.

Apple release iOS 5.1 for the iPhone and iPad

To coinside with announcement of the new iPad 3, Apple have released a new operating system for the iPhone and iPad.

Those already running iOS 5 will be able to update their device just by selection Settings --> Software Update.

There is nothing too exciting in the update, hopefully some big fixes especially the battery life issue.

Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)

Redesigned Camera app for iPad

Sonicwall release the TZ215 Next Generation Firewall

Today I attended a Sonicwall marketing seminar. It was an interesting event and I learnt that in the US the new version of the Sonicwall TZ210 was release, the Sonicwall TZ215.

So whats the difference between the tried and test TZ210 and the new sibling TZ215?

In a nutshell speed and throughput! - Read the brochure

They both will run the same firmware as do all the units in the Sonicwall range, but the throughput on the new unit is up on all counts.

The price will be the same and the new features developed for the Sonciwall flagship Super Massive range of enterprise units will flow through to the SMB units.

Also look out for the new features in OS5.9 and the OS6.0 later in the year.

No sound from Google Chrome

Lots of people have started using the Google browser Chrome. It is definitely faster than internet explorer and easy to use. When you go to google.com it will normally give you the option of installing Chrome.

But what happens when no sound comes from web pages using chrome....its really annoying.

If you can't guess, this happened to me. Lots of goggling later I had a fix which worked.

To enable sound on Google Chrome once it stops:

Open Device manager
Find the Sound card under Sounds.
Click uninstall.
Reboot the computer.

You have sound in Google Chrome!!!!!

Undelivered Mail - 552 MS-Office file containing VBA macros found inside of the email

It happens from time to time - a client gets an email rejected with a standard message,. the cause is anything but standard and takes ages to find.

In this case it is the SMTP settings on a Sonicwall UTM security appliance that does deep packet inspection on incoming SMTP traffic and detected MS Office Macros and decided to reject the email.

The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly.

The NDR message also included #5.2.2 SMTP; 552 MS-Officefile containing VBA macros found inside of the email

This is the give away to check the Sonicwall

To remove the blocking of the email, login to the Sonicwall appliance

- Check the Gateway AntiVirus Security Service under Security Services menu

- Click the SMTP settings button

- Remove all the check boxes in the window.

Harddisk pricing rising due to Thialand floods

Due to devistating floods in Thailand the price of harddisks are likely to go up sharply in the next month.

Western Digital has been the hardest hit so far, but Toshiba also have up to 1 meter or water though out there factory. Seagate are the least effected.

The Worldwide hard drive production total in the last quarter of the year is expected to be about 120 million units, down from 176 million in previous quarter.

No manufacturer has run out yet, but it won't be long.

So if you are looking for new computer harddisks or planning an upgrade now is the time to buy.

Extend your wireless range with Ethernet over Power

We have just installed the new Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit. What a great way to extend a weak wireless signal to far end of a office or home. The system uses the proven Ethernet over Power devices with a wireless access point built into the remote unit.

To configure was easy enough either using the utility on the CD, or just via the web interface on the wireless unit.

Once configured a quick test with the iPad showed the signal jumping from the old access point to the new one at the far end of the office.

Problem solved all for under $150.00.

It might sound simple, but by clicking on the subscribe link at the bottom of newsletters and advertising emails, you can keep your inbox tidier.

Spam filters will do a good job of keeping the nasty stuff away from you. Good Spam filtering remove viruses, malware, fishing attacks.etc and spam emails. They wont stop emails coming from sites you have subscribe to and left your details.

So that leaves you to either ignore the email or unsubscribe. Just click the link and unsubscribe.
