| My old Telstra 3G USB stick died so it was time to replace it. The question was with what? I still have the iPhone 3GS so there was no built in wireless hotspot and the iPhone 5 isn't due out for another 3 months. So I spoke my Telstra Small Business centre and my dealer Sue to find out what I should do. She suggested the Telstra Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi. ![]() Its not a small device but I have been very impressed by its performance. The main place I wanted to use it was up the bush in a notorious Telstra black spot where mobile phones struggle to get 1 bar of signal, and the old Telstra Next G stick was stuggling without an aerial. I plugged in the Ultimate device and once easily configured with my preferred wireless settings and password away we went. It lets you share with 5 devices, which worked nicely for 3 iPhones and 2 laptops. The signal strength sat on 60 % (3 bars). The speed was pretty good for the middle of no where. So I thought it might be time to try a couple of Next G aerials I carry with me from the days of the old stick. I had a small style plug in aerial which reduced the signal strength to 20%. Then a 7 db glass mount style aerial that might be on a car windscreen. The signal dropped to 40%. It didn't matter where I moved the aerial to even with the 5 meter lead the signal strength was better with no aerial. I don't understand why but I am not compaining! So yes I am impressed with the new Ultimate WiFi device. Over time we will need to see what the battery life is like. I will be reommending it. |
